Is Your Tape Drive The Weakest Link

The weakest part of any computer system is it’s mechanical parts. Database Support Team has seen an increase in tape drive related calls, many of which can be prevented with proper care of your tape drive.

If you suspect a problem with your tape drive please do the following before contacting DST.

· Clean the tape drive heads by inserting a cleaning tape.  Tape drives should be cleaned at least once a month.
· Try a new tape, remember tapes are very inexpensive insurance, replace them often.
· To ensure reliable file saves, rotate your backup tapes weekly. DST recommends three complete sets of weekly backup tapes are maintained.  Of the three weekly sets, at least two sets are rotated out every six months. Additionally, it is recommended  that each “month end” tape, is saved indefinitely.

· Recommened tape brand - IBM. Blank tapes as well as Cleaning tapes can be obtained from a local supplier (Call 1-800-IBM-MEDIA for a local supplier - 4MM Data Cartridge, 150 Meters, 20GB. Reorder #59H4458)

IBM - For those on an IBM maintenance contract, IBM will perform preventative maintenance on your RS/6000 once a year to clean the inside of your computer and tape drive.  This service is covered under your IBM contract.  Furthermore, if you have repeated mechanical problems with your IBM tape drive, IBM can change out the internal parts of the tape drive unit.
