SIGNATURE CAPTURE SERVER

Q: If we already have a Windows 2000 or NT Server, do we really need to purchase another, Linux based server?

A: Yes.  DST is requiring that everyone that is interested in implementing the Signature Capture functionality purchase the $2800.00 Linux based File Server (available through DST).  This conclusion was reached for several reasons:

 1) Ease of implementation.
The DST Development Team has worked long and hard evaluating various implementations (including a Windows 2000 or NT based solution) and found that the Linux based server provides both a reliable method of communication with the RS6000 and ease of implementation and setup.

 2) Standardization.
It is very important that we maintain a standard for these new servers to minimize the support effort required to install and maintain the Signature Capture functionality.  We strongly urge everyone to contact DST prior to purchasing any server so that we may provide the exact specifications and a source through which the server may be obtained.

3) Cost vs. Available Components ("Bang for your Buck!").
The Linux File Server at $2800, provides 2x 80GB mirrored hard drives (Invoice storage will need to be reliable, you will want to keep at least seven years and possibly up to ten years worth of invoices on file.  A single year of invoices will only use approximately 1.5GB of storage space, leaving more than enough room), communications software for file, fax and email services and can be easily integrated into your existing network.  For those stores that have not yet invested in a separate server, the Linux File Server provides a full suite of available components at low cost.  Stores that have already purchased a separate Windows 2000 or NT server should also realize that the added expense of a Linux File Server should come back in paper savings fairly rapidly.

 4) Tested and Proven.
The Linux based server solution has been tested and proven in two Johnstone sites to date (with an additional site being added soon).  We have gained valuable experience and insight during this installation and testing process that will make future implementations much easier, provided we maintain a standardized approach.

Hopefully the above helps to answer most of your questions regarding hardware for the Signature Capture functionality.  If you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either Harold Petit or Steve Smith.
