CONTROLLED SHUTDOWN AND RESTART PROCEDURES
Log onto the system on the console port, exit to TCL (x from the main menu)
Type to dm and press enter
Type shutdown and press enter answer y to continue system will wrap up processes on all lines the database will shutdown, returning the system to AIX and display the # prompt
At the # prompt type shutdown –F and press enter (this command is case sensitive and must be typed exactly as shown)
The system will shutdown. This process can take 5-10 minutes. upon completion of the shutdown, “....Halt completed....” will display.
Some RS/6000 models automatically shut their power down at this point, for those that don’t, you need to push the square white button to power them down.
After power is restored, turn on the system, and it will go through the reboot process eventually coming to the prompt below:

Console login:
Login as root entering the root password if prompted.
At the # prompt type ap 0 (that’s the number 0, not the letter O) and press enter.
At the next prompt type X to execute
NOTE – if at any time during this process you see an error message scroll across the screen that says “init – command respawning too rapidly…..” , simply hit CTRL-C or enter and you should be returned to the # prompt.
