PRODUCT CATEGORY AND CLASS TRANSMISSIONS

The Product Category is actually the Department Category code updated by the Data Management department at Corp and applied to every Johnstone catalog product.  This code is transmitted on the Product/price transmissions.  This field is NOT changeable on the stores systems. In other words there is no data entry field to add or change in the Product Master.  Any additions, changes or deletions of the category codes will be updated during the Wednesday weekly upgrade transmission.

The Product Category code is a format: of 3n-2n.  A Product category code of 100-01 is Corp’s Department 100 – major grouping BELTS, and Corp’s category  – 01, appliance belts.

The Product Class code is a 3-digit code consisting of the first 3 digits of the Product category code.  For example, the Product Class code of 100 is Belts, just like the first part of the Product Category code.  The big difference is the Product class codes can be created and/or updated in the Product Master.  Product class codes can also be created for non-Johnstone products.  To maintain a Product class code use Menu 12.3.2.2 for each product.  The field number is 28 on the maintenance screen.  New Product Class codes can be entered or old ones modified in Menu 12.3.3. 

The Product Class code is used in calculating the data for the 10x20 report.  Therefore the Product Class code for non-Johnstone products should be maintained.
